Nestled in the heart of Birmingham, Edgbaston Golf Club ticks all the boxes for golfers of any ability. Voted as one of the top three clubs in Warwickshire, this stunning parkland course was designed by Harry S. Colt and has a rich history extending all the way back to 1896.
The infrastructure of the course only adds to the experience; with the fantastic Edgbaston Pool located adjacent to the course, a haven for local wildlife, as well as the Georgian Grade II listed club house that has a commanding presence as soon as you arrive.
P Quinn Construction were asked by the club to renovate over 340m of ditches to improve their functionality and water management. However, we went one step further and agreed with the club as to how we could turn them into a feature of the course; moving away from the existing hard edges to gentle sloping banks.
We gave the ditches a good clear out in order to ensure they were operating as efficiently possible, with any excess material relocated to the surrounding woodland area, and shaped into the scenery. As we went along, we removed the old wooden struts that were beginning to rot, and put them to one side for the greenkeeping team to recycle. We then used the excavator and tiltrotator to shape in the sloping edges, before handing over to the greenkeeping team to turf.
The woodland side of the ditches is not easily accessible to mow, so the greenkeeping team will be seeding it with a mixture of wildflowers to allow for easy maintenance and to promote biodiversity.
By working closely with the club, we were able to ensure that disruption was kept to an absolute minimum. Despite some of the areas of land we were working on being quite wet and boggy, we worked efficiently to ensure the surrounding area remained tidy, as well as using boards to protect the turf as we moved about the course.
The new style ditches now look like a much more natural feature of the course, and will be effectives for years to come.
