The Belfry is a destination that needs little introduction. Home of the PGA and surrounded by 500 acres of lush countryside, it proudly offers three golf courses for visitors to play on, as well as a hotel and resort for guests to enjoy.
As four-time hosts of the Ryder Cup, and having just secured the British Masters for another four years, we were over the moon to play our part in adding to The Belfry’s rich history.
P Quinn Construction were asked to develop what has to be one of the most iconic practice greens in British golf. Working with the club to finalise a new design, we increased the size of the playing area from 520m2 to 880m2 to create a two-tiered, state-of-the-art practice green.
The Belfry greenkeeping team made a good start by clearing the existing turf so that it could be re-used, so we were able to get stuck in straight away with the shaping work.
First of all, we stripped the topsoil, and then cored out the green area to bring the new design to life. Using an Engcon tiltrotator attached to our excavator meant that we were able to create smooth shapes, whilst ensuring there was no mess.
Next up, to ensure year-round playability, we installed drainage, followed by a gravel carpet for effective water management.
Finally, we applied a layer of rootzone across the whole area, ready to hand back to The Belfry greenkeeping team to reapply the turf.
