OVERVIEW

Woodbridge Golf Club in a 27-hole heathland course in Suffolk, and Golf 100’s number 79 in their 2021 top 100 rankings for courses in England. Situated in a Suffolk Coastal Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and with a history dating back to 1893, Woodbridge is a stunning course steeped in tradition.

P Quinn Construction were asked by lead contractor Profusion Environmental to renovate 12 bunkers on the 9-hole Forest Course during the winter of 2021, as designed by architect Martin Hawtree.

First of all, we stripped the turf surrounding the bunkers, then removed all of the top soil. Next, we shaped the bunker as per the architect’s drawings into the classic Hawtree style, to bring them in line with the other bunkers on the course.

Once approved, we then created the sand line using the excavator and tiltrotator to provide the clean edge for revetting, where we laid strips of turf three layers high in order to build a clear edge of the bunker. Once the revetting was complete, we applied a layer of top soil around the bunker to naturally tie it into the rest of the course.

As the ground at Woodbridge Golf Club is so sandy and free draining, it meant we did not need to install drainage on these bunkers. The final step was handing over to the finishing team to prep and turf.

We also removed 5 bunkers by using the existing material surrounding the bunker to fill it in, before shaping and top soiling the area to make it appear as if the course had always looked this way.
